Pelvic Pain
A Message From Lauren Kirk, PT, DPT, Owner and Found of The Mama Clinic
There are various factors that can contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction in women. For instance, childbirth can lead to muscle and nerve overstretching, connective tissue damage, prolapse, changes in pelvic positioning, and reduced effectiveness of muscular contractions due to scar tissue. Hormonal fluctuations throughout a woman’s life can also affect the functionality of the pelvic floor. Additionally, traumas such as falls, auto accidents, surgical side effects, or unpleasant sexual experiences can cause pelvic floor dysfunction, resulting in pain and/or incontinence. Some women and girls may be born with excessively tight muscles, which can cause pain and incontinence. Conditions like endometriosis, interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome), and pudendal neuralgia are commonly associated with pelvic pain, painful sex, and incontinence.
It is estimated that approximately 25% of women have pelvic floor disorders, and the likelihood of developing such a disorder increases with age, with around 50% of women potentially experiencing one by the age of 80. Incontinence is a significant factor contributing to nursing home admissions. Although it is common, it should not be considered a normal part of the aging process and should be addressed rather than accepted.
The Mama Clinic offers assistance in identifying the underlying cause of your specific issues and developing a personalized program to address your pelvic floor dysfunction. Treatment options may include:
- Myofascial release therapy
- Techniques for relaxation
- Pelvic floor muscle coordination with the rest of the body
- Dry Needling
- Pelvic Floor Strengthening
- Are you tired of experiencing urine leakage (incontinence) while running, jumping, or going about your daily activities?
- Do you have lingering back, hip, or pelvic pain after giving birth that just won't go away?
- Feeling self-conscious, frustrated, or discouraged since becoming a mother, believing that regaining control of your body is impossible?
- Are you experiencing painful or uncomfortable sex?
- Are you struggling to keep up with your children and feeling like you're missing out on life?
- Is your confidence affected because your core isn't functioning properly, you have Diastasis Recti, or you still have a pregnant appearance despite not being pregnant anymore?
- Are you frustrated with previous approaches that haven't worked, even if they were from another physical therapist, or are you unsure about what to try next?
- Are you searching for a long-term, natural solution that will permanently resolve these issues without relying on medications or undergoing surgery?
If you found yourself saying "Yes" to any of these questions, you've come to the right place!
Have You Ever Been Given Advice Like:
- "Just rest for six weeks and then resume your normal activities," but you're still struggling even after weeks, months, or years have passed?
- "Just follow some workout videos on YouTube, and you'll be back in shape in no time," only to find that those workouts cause pain and leakage, leaving you feeling terrible and discouraged.
- Being told that it's "normal" to experience pain or abdominal separation after giving birth and that "everyone leaks" or struggles with bladder control as they age?
- Hearing that everything will be fine if you take some pain relievers?
- Being led to believe that medicine, surgery, or simply "dealing with it" are your only options?
The Reality Is...
- Resting alone will not make a significant difference. You might experience temporary relief, but once you resume your regular activities, you will still be plagued by pelvic pain, urine leakage, and other postpartum symptoms (which I'm sure you've already experienced!).
- Although these issues are commonly encountered, it's important to understand that experiencing lasting pain or urine leakage after pregnancy is NOT NORMAL, regardless of your age or stage in life.
- Relying solely on pain relievers is not a sustainable solution. They can be addictive, pose risks to your health, and may lead to various other health complications.
- It's crucial to recognize that medicine, surgery, and injections are not your only options. While your doctor may present them as the only choices, there are alternative approaches that can address your concerns and provide relief.

Selecting the right healthcare provider for your needs is crucial. If you don’t, you run the risk of undergoing unnecessary surgery, becoming dependent on medications or painkillers, or living with progressively worsening symptoms for the rest of your life.
Opting for the “least-invasive” and most natural treatment is essential to address your leakage, abdominal separation, pelvic floor problems, or postpartum hip/back/pelvic pain and prevent their recurrence in the future.
Working with a provider who understands the interconnectedness of the body is vital for your recovery. Our bodies undergo remarkable transformations throughout our lives, and addressing changes in the neck, back, diaphragm, core, pelvic floor, pelvis, posture, strength, and overall body usage is necessary for full recovery. It goes beyond just performing Kegel exercises.
To achieve a complete recovery, it’s important not only to treat the symptoms but also to work with an expert who is willing to investigate the root cause of your symptoms and dysfunction. This is when you will receive a long-term solution to your problems.
The Mama Clinic Has Developed A Comprehensive Three-Step Process To Eliminate Your Postpartum Symptoms And Ensure You Never Have To Deal With Them Again.
STEP 1 - WE WANT TO HEAR YOUR STORY
We understand the frustrations that come with our healthcare system. Waiting weeks, or even months, for an appointment only to have a brief conversation with a doctor who rushes through the appointment can leave you feeling bewildered and unheard.
Unfortunately, this rushed approach is common in many physical therapy clinics as well. They operate in a fast-paced manner, lacking attentiveness, and the therapists often don’t have enough time to learn about your specific goals or provide personalized care. That’s why we do things differently!
At The Mama Clinic, our first step is to truly listen to your story.
We recognize that every person is unique, especially when it comes to postpartum issues. Each individual has a distinct body, history, and set of pain and symptoms. That’s why we prioritize open and meaningful conversations. We want to gain a thorough understanding of not only what’s happening in your body but also how it’s affecting your daily life.
By taking the time to listen and learn about your experiences, we can lay the foundation for a tailored and effective treatment plan. Your story matters to us, and we believe it is crucial in providing the care and support you need.
STEP 2 - DETERMINE THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF YOUR SYMPTOMS
Many individuals have received a medical term or diagnosis for their bodily issues. It could have been provided by a doctor, identified through tests, or even discovered online. Terms like prolapse, Diastasis Recti, Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, Incontinence, Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain, or Hip/Back/Pelvic Pain may have been associated with your condition.
You may have been told that your only options were to rest, take medication, or simply wait it out. While these approaches might offer temporary relief, they fail to address the root cause of the problem.
The cause of pain or symptoms varies for each individual. No two people have the exact same problem caused by the same underlying factors.
At The Mama Clinic, our objective is to identify the root cause of your specific issue so that not only does your pain subside but it also remains resolved in the long term.
We understand that you may still have doubts or reservations about Integrative Physical Therapy. That’s why we have introduced the free Discovery Visit. Yes, you read it right! The first session is entirely on us!
Our Discovery Visits are specifically designed for individuals who are skeptical, unsure, or have experienced disappointment in the past. During the Discovery Visit, you will gain insight into what is causing your symptoms, how long it will take to address them, and most importantly, you will build confidence in the fact that your problem can be resolved naturally!
STEP #3 - ELIMINATE THE PROBLEM & AVOID FUTURE RECURRENCE
This is the stage where significant transformations occur. We develop a personalized plan that empowers you to…
…resume exercising without the fear of experiencing pain, stiffness, or bladder control issues – yes, even activities like running and jumping!
…engage in playtime with your children, effortlessly lifting and carrying them without any difficulties.
…reclaim intimacy in your relationships without the worry of discomfort or pain.
…rediscover your favorite active lifestyle, whether it’s yoga, running, tennis, or any other activity that brings you joy.
…regain your strength, confidence, and even a sense of sexiness as your body heals from Diastasis Recti/Abdominal Separation and restores full core strength.
Our ideal clients are those who possess the motivation and eagerness to reclaim their active lifestyles, even if they currently feel stuck.
